Innovation & Design

Marilyn Jordan Taylor, FAIA, a partner in the New York office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), has been appointed chairman of the Washington, D.C.-based Urban Land Institute (ULI). She will be the first architect, and the first woman, to head the research and education institute since it was established in 1936. The ULI is dedicated to enhancing land-use. Its 26,000 members are located primarily in the U.S., but there are also members in nearly 100 countries.

Ms. Taylor is a former president of the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects and chairman of the AIA's regional and urban design committee. She says she intends to focus on urban sustainability, smart growth and infrastructure issues confronting U.S. cities during her two-year volunteer term. She notes that she also plans to look at meshing urban density and open space policies, and hopes to build stronger connections with the AIA and other industry associations. Ms. Taylor has been a ULI member since 1988.
