Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Reviews below)

Editor's Review

The Good Inventive use of Oompa Loompas and Wonka candy.

The Bad Controls are all right, but I've played better platformers.

The Bottom Line If you've got kids who are driving you nuts after watching the film, check it out and see if it fits

Step inside the magical world of Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory. Based on the Warner Bros. Pictures feature film directed by Tim Burton and the classic Roald Dahl book, this new videogame allows players to explore deep inside the factory and play the beloved story as Charlie Bucket. Find a Golden Ticket and, along with four other children, win a personal tour of Willy Wonka's factory guided by the notorious and reclusive candy-maker himself. Embark on a fantastic adventure exploring the many extraordinary environments of the factory, including some from the book that do not appear in the film. Discover what happens after the other children, greed-driven and unrestrained, wreak havoc throughout the factory. Then save the chocolate factory from their destruction by solving mystifying puzzles and using inventive candy powers. By helping the Oompa-Loompas and restoring order to the factory, Charlie can earn the respect of Willy Wonka and win an unexpected prize!

Yet another licensed game based on a summer film has come down the pike, and fans of the children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory should be pleased. High Voltage Software has faithfully recreated the Wonka world into a decent platformer, complete with the ability to use candy and Oompa Loompas to your advantage. However, the game is beaten rather quickly, and somehow lacks the inventive touches that the film itself possesses. Still, it could've been worse. Oompa Loompa DDR, anyone?

+/- Graphics have colorful design to them, and the sound has its moments, but don't really go overboard on dazzle.

- Way too simple in nature, as the game was clearly built for kids.

Making a fun, true-to-the-movie game based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was bound to be a tricky task. High Voltage Software did better than expected, although it still comes up short in many areas that prevent it from an overall recommendation. If you've got kids who are driving you nuts after watching the film, check it out and see if it fits their sweet tooth.
