Taking a detour from our traditional coverage... Literary lions among you should check out this Jim MacDonald post on the write-it-yourself Harry Potter page at The Guardian.

I've sometimes thought about hosting a similar exercise on this blog, where everyone is invited to write a news item--or even to collaborate on one--in the style of BusinessWeek. But then I thought that it would feel too much like work. Speaking of BusinessWeek style... When I first arrived at the magazine in the late '80s, there was a grim joke that the standard BusinessWeek keyboard had a key for "irony delete."

Where can I learn more about BW style? US News and World Report published a booklet on their style a number of years ago. Is there a similar document for BW?

Don't get too much like The Guardian, will you? :-)

I've never seen a BW writing manual. We had an essay written by a former colleague, Stewart Toy, that was about the closest thing to a manual. I'll see if I can find a yellowed copy somewhere. If so, I'll post it.
