Evolving from blog post to story

Stephen Baker

As I'd promised my editor last week, I turned that blog post on the mobile Internet into a story for BW Online. If you read the two, you can see that the analysis is a bit different. These evolutions often occur when you take some time to report a story. Sometimes it can cause troubles. You pitch a story (which is a bit like a blog post) and later, when you turn it in, the editors can be dumbfounded to see that it has changed. They're especially irked when the story migrates away from the art they've prepared. (Oh that guy we sent a photographer to shoot in the Amazon? He's not really in the story anymore... Well, I guess I could write him back in...) The way to avoid these problems? Warn editors ahead of time that the story line is evolving.

Today I'll be working on a similar transformation. Can't divulge what the story is. There are some secrets we still keep around here. But if you want to guess, have at it.
