Podcasting, a trio?

Stephen Baker

Three days to finish those podcasting articles for the magazine, and to create a podcast. Thanks for all the tips, and keep them coming. I sent a note Friday to my journalism school classmates, asking for podcasting suggestions. I got a worried response from Joe Weber, our Chicago bureau chief, who pointed out that lots of our classmates work at the Wall Street Journal. It didn't matter, I said. Already blogging it anyway. This open process is a bit of a shock to our system.

I came across this podcast duet on Rogers Cadenhead's site. It amounts to a sing-along where any blogger can add his or her voice. Might be a chorus by the end of this week.

You're right - it's a bit of a shock for a while - but hey - sounds to me like you're getting there...

Does your bureau chief really think noone at the WSJ heard of podcasting before you let it slip to them?

To be fair to Joe, the point wasn't that the Journal hadn't heard about podcasting. It was that if the WSJ knew we were working on a story about it, they would rush to beat us to it. That's why we traditionally try to keep quiet about what we're working on (though when you're asking a thousand people for interviews, it's hard). Also, I should add that the Journal itself ran an article about podcasting that very day, and they mentioned what we told them: that we were planning a special report on it. So on this story, at least, our secrecy is out the window.
