What's Keeping Aid From Those Who Need It

I'm in favor of radically boosting aid to end global poverty and the holocaust created by AIDS, malaria, and hunger ("It takes a global village," Books, Apr. 11). An insignificant amount of sacrifice by Western nations could have a dramatic impact on the lives of millions of people. But logistics are a greater challenge than money. Corrupt governments and rebel forces make it impossible to deliver lifesaving supplies. Safeguarding the aid pipeline is key to alleviating poverty in less-developed countries. Even at the current level of funding, many more people would be saved if aid actually reached those in need.
