Lots of response to Jessi Hempel's commentary on bloggers and journalism. Dan Gillmor linked to the story and clarified that bloggers can in fact be sued for libel.

Hempel responds:

It wasn? my intention to suggest bloggers can? be held accountable in the same way. So far, bloggers haven? often been lawsuit targets because most don? have deep pockets. As I went on to write, blogger Lockhart Steele acknowledges that a lawsuit could bring down a blog like his, which runs on a scant budget, quite quickly.
