Research In Motion Jumps

Research In Motion (RIMM) is seen higher on talk that it's a possible acquisition target of Hewlett-Packard.

Laser-Pacific Media (LPAC) agreed to be acquired by Eastman Kodak for $4.22 per share. The purchase price, totaling $30.5 million, will be paid in Kodak stock or cash at Kodak's option.

Baird upgraded Winnebago (WGO) to outperform from neutral.

Veritas (VTS) expects to report a net fourth-quarter loss, citing delays in several major contracts, a loss from the sale of the (RC)2 software business, and potential write-offs of deferred tax assets.

Merrill downgraded Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) to neutral from buy. S&P keeps accumulate.

Sonosite (SONO) posted a 9-cent second-quarter loss vs. a 20-cent loss on a 21% sales rise. It sees 2003 revenues at the low end of the previous $90 million to $110 million forecast. Deutsche Bank reportedly downgraded to hold from buy.

Allied Waste (AW) posted 13 cents vs. 24 cents second-quarter earnings per share. The results exclude charges. S&P reiterates hold.

Gilead Sciences (GILD) posted 46 cents vs. 10 cents second-quarter earnings per share on sharply higher revenues. S&P maintains accumulate.

Disney (DIS) posted 19 cents vs. 18 cents third-quarter earnings per share on a 6.6% revenue rise, beating analyst expectations.

A Los Angeles Sperior Court jury returned a verdict in favor of Altria (MO) brought by a 64-year-old plaintiff who had claimed he was unaware of the risks of smoking.

Cigna (CI) reported 38-cent second-quarter loss vs. $1.50 earnings per share. Excluding investment results and special items, the health-benefits company posted $1.13 vs. $1.96. Cigna saw a 2.1% consolidated revenue decline.

Starbucks (SBUX) posted 9% higher July same-store sales, and a 23% total sales rise.

Chiquita (CQB) posted $1.19 vs. $1.14 second-quarter earnings per share (continuing operations) on a 90% sales rise.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN) posted a 58-cent second-quarter loss vs. a 69-cent loss on an 88% total revenue rise.

John Hancock Financial (JHF) posted $1.00 vs. 33 cent second-quarter earnings per share despite flat sales.

Georgia Gulf (GGC) posted 26 cents vs. 12 cents second-quarter earnings per share on a 16% sales rise, and significantly higher sales prices. It sees flat-to-slightly-lower overall earnings per share for the third quarter vs. the second quarter.

Business Objects (BOBJ) posted 18 cents vs. 18 cents second-quarter earnings per ADS despite a 16% revenue rise.
