Guest: Paul Cherney, Standard & Poor's market analyst

"The long-term trend is up, the short-term trend is down, but if you can call the intermediate-term trend, then you're making money."

That's the credo of Paul Cherney, market analyst for Standard & Poor's, whose blend of fundamental and technical analysis appears regularly on Business Week Online: Personal Investing.. He's the guest in another of the investment chats presented every Thursday at the same time by BusinessWeek Online.

Paul is widely watched for his reading of the market's psychology, reinforced by his reading of the technical indicators -- and what better time than now to find out what he foresees for this extremely volatile market? And what names look best -- and worst -- on a technical basis?

A graduate of Lafayette College, Paul started in securities as a retail broker with A.G. Edwards in 1989. In the bear market of 1990 he became interested in short- and intermediate-term price swings and turned to the study of technical analysis. He joined S&P's MarketScope in 1995.

Also online as co-host will be Karyn McCormack (Karynmack), producer for BW Online. The moderator of this chat will be Jack Dierdorff (JackBW), consulting editor of BW Online and former managing editor of the magazine.
