Started out as $10,000-a-year marketing researcher in Charlotte rising to corporate management at Knight-Ridder. Hired as publisher in St. Paul and then at Times Mirror's Baltimore Sun. Promoted in 1997 to executive vice-president at Times Mirror Co. and president of Times Mirror Eastern Newspapers. Overseeing Newsday and the Hartford Courant. Joined Lee Enterprises in 1999 as COO. Promoted to top job two years later.
