Iiyama AS4636D

WHAT'S HOT: Iiyama's AS4636D received high scores for its graphics from our judging panel, which noted its rich yet well-balanced color in photos. It was also rated highly for accurately displaying subtly different shades of gray. The monitor's inputs, including S-Video and RCA-jack TV ports, are lined up vertically on the side of the panel, so they're easy to use. Below, the monitor's base contains two speakers, a headphone jack, a volume control, and four USB ports. We also liked this unit's tilt and swivel functions, which operated especially smoothly.

WHAT'S NOT: Iiyama's phone support is limited to 10 hours on weekdays. Moreover, this monitor has fewer image adjustment options than some competitors do; for example, it lacks individual RGB (red, green, and blue) adjustments. The unit has only three buttons on the bezel for manipulating the on-screen controls, so making adjustments requires lots of button-pressing.

WHAT ELSE: Iiyama employs in-plane switching to increase the AS4636D's viewing angle, which the company rates at 170 degrees both vertically and horizontally. The monitor comes with a short but sufficient printed manual and pivot software on CD-ROM. We tested a unit with a black case, but it comes in white as well.

UPSHOT: A moderate price, solid image quality, and lots of conveniently placed connections should make this flat panel especially appealing to digital video editors. By Rebecca Freed
