Europe Ends Week with Losses

European markets finished lower, ending a week of losses sparked by year-end portfolio adjusting. In London, the Financial Times-Stock Exchange 100 index fell 13.90 points, or 0.27%, to close at 5,061.00. The biggest contributors to the decline included GlaxoSmithKline, BP-Amoco and Diageo. In France, the CAC 40 lost 70.64 points, or 1.60%, to close at 4,340.02. In Germany, the DAX Index dropped 39.28 points, or 0.79%, to 4,926.77, led by losses in Deutsche Telecom, Allianz and Seimens.

Canadian stocks ended down on weakness in technology issues. Canada's benchmark TSE index fell 25.51 points, or 0.34%, at 7,425.70.

In Asia, the markets finished mixed. Japan's Nikkei added 78.20 points, or 0.75%, to 10,511.65, in a modest rebound from Thursday's sell-off, its worst one-day decline since Sept. 17. Still, decliners beat gainers by 1,065 to 347. In Hong Kong, the market lost 63.43 points, or 0.55%, to 11,466.11.
