Computer Sciences Posts Lower Earnings

Computer Science (CSC) posted $0.40 vs. $0.64 2Q EPS as higher costs offset an 11% revenue rise. The company now sees 3Q EPS in high $0.40s to low $0.50s range.

BEA Systems Inc (BEAS) sees $0.05-$0.06 3Q EPS (pro forma) on revenue of $217M-$221M. It also sees $0.06-$0.07 4Q EPS (pro forma). BEA will cut its workforce by about 9-10% by end of year. Roberston Stephens cuts estimates, CSFB downgrades.

Cigna Corp (CI) posted $1.66 3Q operating EPS (excl $0.22 gain from sale of reinsurance business) vs. $1.76 on a 4.9% revenue drop. Results include charges of $0.17 per share after-tax related to September 11.

Protein Design (PDLI) posted $0.02 3Q loss vs. $0.06 loss on 74% revenue rise. The company expects breakeven to slightly positive 2001 net. S&P maintains hold. (PCLN) posted $0.03 3Q EPS vs. $0.01 loss despite 12% lower revenues. S&P maintains hold. (HOMS) posted $0.06 3Q loss vs. $0.19 loss (pro forma) on a 34% revenue rise. The company will record $50M-$100M in one-time charges in 4Q. It sees $95M-$105M 4Q revenue and a $0.30-$0.38 loss per share from from operation.

J D Edwards & Co (JDEC) sees 4Q license fee revenue above previous guidance of $70M, total revenue of $220M-$225M. The company sees 4Q EPS from normalized operations to exceed guidance of $0.04.

Unilever (UN) posted 5% higher 3Q net profit on 13% higher sales.

Starbucks (SBUX) posted flat October comparable-store sales, 19% higher total sales.

JDA Software (JDAS) posted $0.15 vs. $0.12 3Q EPS on a 15% revenue rise.
