Table: The Right Stuff for Windows XP

For many people, taking advantage of the new Windows XP operating system may require buying a new computer, especially if your computer is more than two years old. Here are the critical elements to look for:

MEMORY

This has the biggest impact on performance. Microsoft recommends 128 megabytes; 256 MB is better.

PROCESSOR

Almost any new one will do. Microsoft recommends at least a 300 MHz Pentium II. Few new computers these days come with a processor slower than 800 MHz.

DISPLAY

On a laptop, you'll want a display with at least 1,024 by 768 pixels. On a desktop, go for at least a 17-in. CRT monitor or a 15-in. flat panel.
