Canada Shares Rally

Canada's benchmark TSE 300 closed higher in tandem with U.S. stocks, despite an outage in the Nasdaq. The index finished up 136.35 points to 7736.40, helped by Thursday's close just off the high and the US$2.30 bounce in spot gold. Also, the positive bias in the U.S., and the fact that it's the Friday before a long weekend boosted the TSE 300. All but one of the 14 sub-indices rose, while the gold and precious minerals index was little changed. Canadian financial markets will be closed for the Canada Day holiday Monday.

European markets closed mixed. In London, the Financial Times 100 Index was up 4.10 points, or 0.07%, to 5642.50. France's CAC 40 Index was up 91.77, or 1.79%, to 5225.33. In Germany, the Dax Index gained 58.72, or 0.98%, to 6030.49.

Asian markets ended higher. In Japan, the Nikkei gained 289.17, or 2.28%, to close at 12969.05. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index rose 214.71, or 1.67%, to close at 13042.53.
