After Big Loss, Apple Hopes to Regain Its Shine

Apple (AAPL) posted a $0.58 per share Q1 loss vs. $0.51 EPS on a 57% revenue decline. The company says it plans return to sustained profitability beginning this quarter and expects fiscal 2001 revenue to be about $6 billion.

International Business Machines (IBM) posted $1.48 vs. $1.12 Q4 EPS on 6% higher revenues. S&P maintains its accumulate rating.

Xilinx Inc. (XLNX) posted $0.31 vs. $0.20 Q3 EPS from operations on 70% higher revenues. Merrill Lynch cut its estimates.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) posted lower than expected $0.53 vs. $0.21 Q4 EPS on 22% higher revenues. The company sees Q1 revenue flat with Q4. S&P cut its estimates. Robertson Stephens upgraded the stock to buy.

SG Cowen reportedly upgraded Computer Associates (CA) shares to strong buy from buy.

Salomon SB initiated coverage on Capstone Turbine (CPST) shares with a speculative buy.

Sanmina (SANM) posted $0.34 vs. $0.15 Q1 EPS on an 82% revenue rise. Merrill Lynch and Prudential raised their estimates. S&P reiterated its buy rating on the stock.

Photon Dynamics (PHTN) posted $0.38 vs. $0.21 Q1 EPS from operations on a 50% revenue rise. The company says flat panel display customers delaying investments and it is taking a conservative view for the second half. Needham cut its estimates and price target.

Vignette (VIGN) posted breakeven 4Q vs. a $0.02 per share loss on a sharp revenue rise. The company sees a $0.01 per share Q1 loss and $0.09 2001 EPS. The company cites the uncertain IT spending environment.

I2 Technologies (ITWO) posted $0.09 vs. $0.05 4Q EPS (pro forma) on sharp revenue rise. S&P raised its estimates, but maintains a hold rating on the stock.

Credence Systems (CMOS) sees Q1 revenues at least 40% below Q4 levels. The company cites weakening orders, customer-requested shipment delays. Robertson Stephens downgraded the company's shares to long term attractive from buy.

Symantec Corp. (SYMC) posted $0.78 vs. $0.56 3Q EPS from operations on 18% revenue rise. The company set a $700 million stock buyback. Pacific Crest reportedly downgraded the shares to buy from strong buy.

Diebold, Inc. (DBD) sees $0.49 Q4 EPS, vs. previous guidance of $0.52-$0.56. S&P downgraded the stock to hold.

Caterpillar Inc (CAT) posted $0.76 vs. $0.67 4Q EPS. The company expects 2001 sales and revenues to be about flat with 2000, with a relatively weaker first half as result of slowing GDP in U.S. CAT says 2001 profit projected to be down about 5%-10%.

Sears (S) posted $1.91 vs. $1.98 4Q EPS from ops as higher costs offset 2.4% revenue rise... Cites slowing economy, sees high single to low double-digit 2001 EPS growth.

UAL Corp (UAL) posted $1.40 4Q GAAP loss vs. $0.84 GAAP EPS as higher op. costs offset 6.9% revenue rise. The company says due to higher labor costs, fuel prices, expects a Q1 loss and 2001 modest profit.

Redback Network (RBAK) posted $0.05 vs. $0.02 Q4 EPS (pro forma) on sharp higher revenues. SG Cowen downgraded the stock to buy from strong buy.

Natural Microsystems (NMSS) posted lower than expected $0.02 Q4 EPS vs. $0.03 loss on 37% higher revenues. Says more uncertain economy, broad-based slowdown in planned communications equip. spending likely to effect 1H '01 results.

Extreme Networks (EXTR) posted $0.11 vs. $0.06 Q2 EPS (pro forma) on sharply higher revenues.

KLA-Tencor Corp. (KLAC) posted $0.57 vs. $0.26 Q2 EPS on 73% higher revenues. S&P upgraded the stock to accumulate. CS First Boston raised its estimates and reiterated its buy rating.

Unisys Corp. (UIS) posted $0.41 vs. $0.46 Q4 EPS from operations on slightly lower revenues. Sees $0.20-$0.25 Q1 EPS on flat revenues (pro forma basis excluding de-emphasized biz).

Ford (F) posted $0.64 vs. $0.83 Q4 EPS from continuing operations on 3% lower sales. The company cited a weak U.S. vehicle industry conditions.

Efficient Networks (EFNT) posted narrower than expected $0.12 Q2 loss from operations vs. $0.09 loss as higher expenses offset sharp higher revenues.
