When Politicians And The Courts Cross Paths (Int'l Edition)

International -- Readers Report

When Politicians and the Courts Cross Paths (int'l edition)

In the laudable desire to improve the American voting system, it is often overlooked that the candidates have already been preselected by big business and other moneyed interests. This is done through the huge campaign contributions, without which no candidate has a chance to be nominated, much less elected.

Any reform of our voting system must include the bipartisan campaign finance reform effort as repeatedly proposed by Senators John McCain and Russ Feingold. Only then will we elect officeholders whose principal interest is to serve the voters and not their big-money contributors.

Will Oil and Government Mix? (int'l edition)

Ever since George W. Bush became heir apparent, we non-Texans have been anticipating a pretty heavy dose of oil and Texas ("The stewards of a Bush economy?" Government, Dec. 18). First there was Dick Cheney (Halliburton) and then, when the going got rough, there was James A. Baker III (Reliant Energy), and now as W. is about to ascend, there's still more to look forward to. Let's hope we can avoid a slippery slide into a black hole--a crude one, at that.
