English Won't End Belgium's Language Wars (Int'l Edition)

International -- Readers Report

ENGLISH WON'T END BELGIUM'S LANGUAGE WARS (int'l edition)

As a Dutch-speaking Belgian in Sweden, I wish to respond to "Where the language wars heat up" (Spotlight on Belgium, June 8). William Echikson proposes as a solution to the "language wars" in Brussels and Sint-Genesis-Rode that everybody speak English. But language and culture cannot just be replaced. English is common in business but cannot be the day-to-day language.

Apart from letting everybody speak English, there is another obvious solution not only to the language wars but also to the [political] problems: Split the country and let Wallonia and Flanders find their own economic and political ways in a united Europe, with respect, of course, for culture and language.
