International -- Editor's Memo

THE RIGHT STUFF (int'l edition)

BUSINESS WEEK's international correspondents were recently honored with two awards from America's Overseas Press Club for Asian and environmental reporting. Our Asian team, led by regional editor Joyce Barnathan in Hong Kong, Tokyo bureau chief Brian Bremner, and Asian edition editor Chris Power in New York received the club's Morton Frank Award for best business reporting from abroad in magazines.

The team produced 15 cover stories on the Asian crisis last year, four of which the club's judges noted "rang all of the bells that have now become familiar: a condemnation of crony capitalism and a call for more disclosure, better accountability to shareholders, and less meddling by government bureaucrats." Four of the covers--"Asia's Bad Banks" (Feb. 24), "Currency Crisis" (July 28), "After The Shock" (Nov. 10), and "The $100 Billion Bailout In Asia" (Nov. 17)--gave readers "a clear, comprehensive, and prescient view of the coming disaster," the judges noted, adding that "nobody who reads BUSINESS WEEK should have been surprised."

For environmental reporting, science editor Paul Raeburn, science writers John Carey and Cathy Arnst, and editorial page editor Bruce Nussbaum received a citation for their coverage of global warming. We're proud of them all.Robert J. Dowling, Managing Editor, International
