Saturn's Contract Stays In Orbit

SATURN'S CONTRACT STAYS IN ORBIT

IT'S STILL A DIFFERENT KIND of car company. Union workers at General Motors' Saturn division on Mar. 11 voted to keep their innovative contract, often deemed a model of union-management cooperation. Saturn's members called the vote because Saturn sales are down 20%, which they feared threatened their bonuses and job security. After the vote, union chairman Michael Bennett blasted GM for failing to commit new capital and products to Saturn: "The partnership is alive and well at Saturn," he says. "But GM has yet to live up to its part of the bargain." He warned workers won't continue their unusual alliance forever without greater support from GM.EDITED BY KELLEY HOLLAND
