THINKING MACHINES THINKS SOFTWARE

THINKING MACHINES, WHICH flamed out in 1994 trying to pioneer low-cost supercomputers, is set to reemerge from its year in Chapter 11--as a software company. Under a plan filed on Nov. 8, the Bedford (Mass.) company will market its proprietary software to computer makers looking for a jump start into massively parallel processing. That's the technology, based on hundreds of chips working in tandem, that Thinking Machines once tried to sell. Customers did not arrive in droves back then. This time, though, Thinking Machines has a strong partner: It will package its Global Works program with servers sold by Sun Microsystems.EDITED BY KEITH H. HAMMONDS
