DEMOCRACY IS ALIVE AND WELL IN SOUTHERN AFRICA (int'l edition)
Thank you for "Spotlight on South Africa" (Sept. 25). It highlights the fact that the African National Congress can change from a culture of protest to a culture of governance. As a Fulbright scholar who has studied in southern Africa, I am frequently challenged by misinformed individuals who declare that South Africa will not succeed because "black governments like the ANC do not succeed in Africa." Beside being obviously racist, this is simply not true. Black governments, such as Botswana, have been successful despite interference by the white-led National Party of South Africa.
