FOUNDER SAFI QURESHEY IS perilously close to losing control of $2.5 billion personal-computer maker AST Research. On Sept. 11, the company announced that revenues for the current quarter would be flat or down, and that it would post a net loss "significantly higher" than the $40 million shortfall for the quarter a year ago. Analysts now predict that AST also will report a loss for the fiscal year ending next July.
