ALAN'S INVISIBLE HAND?

Who really nixed Alicia Munnell as a member of the Federal Reserve Board? It looked as though Senate Republicans forced President Clinton to back off from naming the Treasury economist. But Clinton insiders believe the mastermind of the anti-Alicia movement was Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan, no Munnell fan during her days as research director of the Boston Fed Bank. Clinton's advisers suspect Greenspan whipped up opposition among bankers and GOP senators.
