AREA CODE MELTDOWN
New area codes are giving lots of business phone systems fits. Starting on Jan. 7, metro Chicago, western Washington State, and southern Alabama got the first area codes that don't have a 1 or a 0 in the middle, and many business callers were unable to reach the new numbers. That's because their PBXs didn't recognize the new codes as valid. With several more such codes scheduled to take effect this year, Bill Todd, external affairs manager for BellSouth in Birmingham, cautions businesses to make sure that their PBX software is up to date.
