COMMENTARY

Yet another topsy-turvy week in the financial markets. The biggest news--the

Republican juggernaut seizure of Capitol Hill--prompted a curiously blase

reaction on Wall Street. After an initially sharp gain earlier in the day,

stocks settled back. The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day on Nov. 9

with a gain of one point. Earlier in the week, stocks fell because of concerns

that the Federal Reserve may act to boost interest rates. With oil stocks and

utilities taking the worst hits, the Dow took a 38-point decline on Nov. 4.
