THE ENERGY DEPT. IS FOR CLEANUP AND PREVENTION
Your article on environmental technologies, "A green industrial policy takes root" (Science & Technology, July 25), mistakenly leaves the impression the Energy Dept. is concerned that the Clinton Administration's focus on pollution prevention will undermine the development of cleanup
As chair of the department's Pollution Prevention Executive Board, I can assure you we are committed to pollution prevention. At the same time, the department is committed to cleanup. We have increased the budget for the technologies needed to tackle the mess at the nation's nuclear weapons production facilities; many of these technologies will reduce the cost of remediation in the private sector. We can and will achieve both essential missions: clean up past pollution and help prevent future pollution.
