Ron Carey's Pretty Good Review

In Business This Week

RON CAREY'S PRETTY GOOD REVIEW

Teamster chief Ron Carey has won some vindication. The Independent Review Board (IRB), charged with overseeing the long-troubled union, announced on July 11 that it had found no evidence that Carey had ties to organized crime or had accepted illegal payments to finance an extensive personal real estate portfolio. Allegations linking Carey to organized crime had been made by a former crime-family boss; his real estate holdings were first reported by BUSINESS WEEK. The IRB did find, however, that Carey had improperly signed his wife's name on notarized documents and had asked a union employee to witness a false signature. The IRB described Carey's actions as "troubling" and "improper," but noted that the matter was not linked to union business.EDITED BY KEITH H. HAMMONDS
