Mail From The Postmaster General

Business Week International Readers Report

MAIL FROM THE POSTMASTER GENERAL

Gary S. Becker's column "Neither rain nor sleet nor good idea shall shake up the postal system" (Economic Viewpoint, June 20) stunned me with its inaccuracies. For example, postmasters have not been politically appointed since 1971. And the expedited-mail market was started by the U.S. Postal Service in 1970 and not by Federal Express.

The most recent sampling by Opinion Research Corp. shows that 85% of the public rates their post effice as good, very good, or excellent. I firmly believe the Postal Service serves America and American business well.

Marvin Runyon

Postmaster General, CEO

U.S. Postal Service
