Washington Outlook: Capital Wrapup

ISSUES

A shift in public sentiment about which issues are most important could spell trouble for Democrats next year. A new poll by Democratic pollster Celinda Lake and Republican pollster Edward Goeas found that 66% of voters cite crime and personal security as their biggest concern. Only 30% rank issues such as jobs and the economy first. That's a stunning turnabout just since August, when pocketbook issues topped voter concerns. Historically, voters prefer Republicans to deal with crime. Health care, Clinton's top priority, ranks third with voters, with about 30% calling it most important.
