Another Round Of Microsoft Vs. Novell

In Business This Week

ANOTHER ROUND OF MICROSOFT VS. NOVELL

Microsoft and Novell tend to express their mutual dislike in the marketplace. On Sept. 21, Microsoft, the leading PC software maker, dramatically slashed the price of its new Windows NT Advanced Server program. It will charge a flat fee of $1,495 for the software, giving away the versions for additional PCs on a network--and dramatically undercutting Novell. Novell, meanwhile, is bundling a version of the Unix operating system with its popular NetWare. Novell bought the rights to Unix from AT&T in June for $350 million. Now, the company will sell a ready-to-use version of Unix to makers of PCs and workstations.EDITED BY KEITH H. HAMMONDS
