Washington Outlook: Capital Wrapup

Things are looking brighter for Old Dominion Democrats, despite an ugly feud between retiring Governor L. Douglas Wilder and Senator Charles S. Robb: Former Attorney General Mary Sue Terry, the state Democratic convention's consensus nominee for this fall's gubernatorial election, holds a commanding lead over three GOP contenders. In a recent Mason-Dixon Political/Media Research poll, former Representative George F. Allen, state legislator Clinton Miller, and businessman Earle C. Williams all trailed Terry by 29 percentage points or more. In the same poll, both Robb--who narrowly escaped indictment in a phone-tapping scandal--and Wilder lead former Marine Colonel Oliver North in trial heats for next year's Senate election. Robb has an eight-point lead over Wilder in Democratic primary polling.
