What's On The Front Page? Whatever You Want

Bits & Bytes

WHAT'S ON THE FRONT PAGE? WHATEVER YOU WANT

Imagine: You wake up in the morning, and waiting for you is a newspaper tailored specifically to your personal interests. Interested in weather conditions in Tokyo? There it is on page one. Want to find out which critics liked the latest film? Movie reviews are just below the fold. Now, with help from PED Software Corp., you can become a virtual Rupert Murdoch.

The San Jose (Calif.) startup company has developed a program for IBM and compatible PCs dubbed Journalist. First, you design the look of the newspaper, specifying what type of news should appear where and how often you want your personalized tabloid published. The $130 program then links up with the CompuServe Information Service, an on-line computer service owned by H&R Block Inc., and searches for the requested news. PED is also working on a version that will search the Prodigy Interactive Personal Service.EDITED BY PAUL M. ENG
