Lawyers Should Be Paid On Value Received

Readers Report

LAWYERS SHOULD BE PAID ON VALUE RECEIVED

Your article on change in lawyers' billing from hourly to value received ("Lawyers start to stop the clock," Legal Affairs, Aug. 17) is pertinent not only to corporations but also to individuals.

In five recent experiences with lawyers, I have had two pleasant and three difficult situations. The pleasant experiences have been based on the establishment of a fee prior to having the work done, with the fee adhered to.

The difficult incidences have all re-sulted from the attorney originally stating a fee and then increasing the billing based on a larger-than-anticipated number of hours that was spent to complete the job.

Value billing is long overdue in the legal profession.
