The Hidden Costs Of Immigration

Readers Report

THE HIDDEN COSTS OF IMMIGRATION

Your article "The immigrants" (Cover Story, July 13) states that immigrants pay more in taxes than they receive in welfare. This ignores the cost of delivery of services and the building and repair of infrastructure that population growth necessitates. The cost of education is a huge reason that California is facing a $14.3 billion deficit. California's population growth, about half from immigration, requires the building of a school classroom virtually every hour. Higher fertility rates among recent immigrants have raised the state's overall fertility rate, furthering the problems associated with population growth.
