`I'M SORRY, BUT YOUR VOICE IS UNACCEPTABLE'
Companies are losing billions of dollars through fraudulent long-distance calls made by phone hackers. By using computers or simply eavesdropping at public phone booths, they steal the codes needed to enter a company's private branch exchange (PBX). But Moscom Corp. in Rochester, N. Y., will soon offer a PBX add-on for additional protection.
Called VoiceLock, the device uses speech recognition to thwart intruders. In addition to punching in a code, callers must speak a password. Only voices that match the "voice prints" stored in VoiceLock will be connected to the company's network. What's more, the system takes into account that speech isn't consistant, so if it gets a "perfect" match, it will suspect a trick and still deny access.EDITED BY PAUL M. ENG
