Where Are The Hackers Of Yesteryear?

Bits & Bytes

WHERE ARE THE HACKERS OF YESTERYEAR?

A loose-knit group of young computerphiles known as Legion of Doom was started in 1984 and did its best to penetrate networks of academic, government, and corporate computers throughout the U. S. Since then, three group members have been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to stealing confidential information from a BellSouth Corp. network. That inspired three other former Legionnaires of Doom, age 21 to 24, to look for careers on the right side of the law. They have founded Data Security, a Houston consulting company.

Their new mission is to compete with big consulting outfits, such as Deloitte & Touche and Ernst & Young, by selling their expertise in computer security to America's largest corporations. "We know how a hacker thinks and how a hacker hacks," says Scott Chasin, one of the company's co-founders. Although they won't help law enforcement officials bust hackers, Chasin says they will testify as expert witnesses in court.EDITED BY SUNITA WADEKAR-BHARGAVA
