A Robust American Tradition

In a recent interview with Biblical Recorder, Dan Cathy, the president and chief operating officer of Chick-fil-A, spoke openly of his opposition to same-sex marriage. It didn’t take long for a wide array of gay marriage supporters to respond by expressing their distaste for Cathy’s views and to call for a boycott of the privately owned company’s more than 1,600 restaurants around the country. In doing so, they joined a robust American tradition. Long before boycottchickfila.com (tagline: “How can something so good be so evil?”) implored readers to abstain from crispy chicken sandwiches and waffle fries in the name of political righteousness, outraged groups have attempted to rally conscientious consumers against the purchase of beer (specifically, Coors), chocolate (Nestlé), and pizza (Domino’s). Herein, a brief look back at the marchers against corporate brands and the causes that inspired them.
