Apple's Smartwatch Plans Coming Into View

Information about Apple’s (AAPL) planned smartwatch is beginning to come out. In a profile of Tim Cook last weekend, the New York Times reported that Cook had delegated the development of the project to other executives, including Jonathan Ive; that he was primarily interested in the broader use of the device as a way to help people improve their health, and that the device would be available before the end of this year.

On Friday the Wall Street Journal has a report with more details, citing anonymous sources familiar with the project:

• The smartwatch will come in multiple versions, with different size screens. The exact specs are still being finalized.

• The watch will use more than 10 sensors to monitor such things as physical activity. When Apple introduced software called HealthKit that tracks such data from multiple connected devices, it seemed like a precursor for a device that Apple would manufacture itself.

• Production will begin within two to three months at Quanta Computer (2382:TT), the Taiwan manufacturer that Apple already relies on for Macs.

• Apple plans to ship 10 million to 15 million units by the end of the year.
