Olin's 'Disorientation:' Baseball, Bars, and a Barn Dance

Olin's 'Disorientation:' Baseball, Bars, and a Barn Dance

At the start of nearly every MBA program, new students take part in a multiday orientation that includes team-building activities, a tour of the B-school, a few social events, and maybe a personality test or two.

Washington University’s Olin Business School in St. Louis is no different. It offers a two-week orientation for new students called Gateway Olin, or simply GO! What is unique about Olin is that it ends the two-year, full-time MBA experience with a weeklong event called Disorientation that occurs between the end of finals and graduation.

The week of events, planned by first-year Olin MBAs, cater to the second-year students who are set to graduate as a last hurrah, of sorts—a chance to spend time with their classmates without the stress of classes or exams getting in the way.

This year’s list of events included a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game, a float trip followed by a visit to a winery, a whiskey tour and tasting, a bar crawl, and a barn dance, pictured above. Jokes Joe Fox, associate dean and director of MBA programs at Olin: “We are always very proud to claim that all of our graduates have been totally disoriented by the time they finish here.”
