For years Democrats have courted Latinos in Arizona, only to be foiled by low voter registration and turnout. That’s changing, at least in part because of Republican Governor Jan Brewer’s anti-immigration agenda. A 2010 Arizona law requires police officers to check the immigration status of people they suspect are in the country illegally. Now Hispanic voter registration is surging—up 51 percent since 2008, according to the Arizona Democratic Party. The increase likely won’t be enough for President Obama to win Arizona. (He lost to native son John McCain by 9 percent in 2008.) But a report by the Morrison Institute’s Latino Public Policy Center at Arizona State University predicts the state could turn blue by 2025. Says the center’s director, Joseph Garcia: “I think the generation coming up will be a lot more politically engaged.”
