 Golden Gate University Launches Program for Aspiring Business Owners  NEWS RELEASE TRANSMITTED BY Marketwired  FOR: Golden Gate University  JULY 23, 2014  Golden Gate University Launches Program for Aspiring Business Owners  SAN FRANCISCO, CA --(Marketwired - July 23, 2014) -  In fall 2014, Golden Gate University (GGU) will launch its first Small Business Program designed to help its alumni become successful small business owners. The year-long pilot program is supported by a $300,000 grant from Chevron. The program is free, thanks to the Chevron grant.  "We're responding to a need for this type of programing," says Paul Fouts, Dean of GGU's Edward S. Ageno School of Business. "This is not for people chasing the start-up dream. This is a more traditional business approach serving GGU alumni who are thinking about starting a practice or small business."  Small businesses have created more than half of all U.S. jobs since the 1970s. The number of U.S. small businesses has increased 49 percent since 1982. And since 1990, as corporate America eliminated four million jobs, small businesses added eight million new jobs.  "Chevron is committed to boosting local economies, increasing incomes and improving livelihoods in the communities where we operate," says Dale Walsh (BS '81, LHD '12), President, Chevron Americas Products, and a GGU alumnus and trustee. "One of the ways we do this is by supporting local businesses. We are proud to support this program, and we applaud its efforts to develop small businesses."  The year-long pilot program starts with a 10-week workshop, led by faculty and alumni, covering the fundamentals of starting a practice or small business, resulting in a business launch plan. Each student is paired with an experienced practitioner to help guide business growth, answer questions and provide advice. The cohort meets monthly after the workshop is completed. All students are expected to start a practice or small business before the end of the program and to be a mentor in the future.
