Hill+Knowlton Strategies Alumnus Michael Kehs Named US Energy Practice
Leader and Houston Office GM
HOUSTON -- March 12, 2014
Hill+Knowlton Strategies has welcomed back Michael Kehs, who previously served
as the firm’s Washington, D.C., general manager and head of the firm’s U.S.
public affairs practice, to head up both the Houston office and the U.S.
energy practice. The 30-year public affairs and corporate communications
veteran assumes the role March 17.
“It’s not every day we get to welcome back outstanding former leaders, but
that is precisely the case with Michael,” said Andy Weitz, U.S. president and
CEO. “From the three years he spent leading our Washington and public affairs
teams, to his decades of experience making his mark elsewhere in the agency
and corporate realms, Michael brings deep corporate and energy expertise that
will once again make him a key member of our U.S. team.”
Over the span of his career, Kehs has developed and implemented
multidisciplinary issues management, crisis communications, corporate
positioning, public service and advocacy campaigns for Fortune
500corporations and industry associations. Prior to founding his own firm in
2013, Kehs was vice president of strategic affairs and public relations at
Chesapeake Energy Corporation, an Oklahoma City-based independent exploration
and production (E&P) company and the most active driller of natural gas and
oil wells in the U.S. He led the company’s extensive internal and external
communications initiatives, produced the company’s inaugural Corporate
Responsibility Report and served as media spokesperson.
Prior to joining Chesapeake, Kehs served for more than two decades in a
variety of leadership roles at three of the largest global public relations
and public affairs agencies. During the three of those years at H+K (2008 –
2011), he served clients across multiple practice groups and geographies, led
the team that launched and built America’s Natural Gas Alliance, and helped
manage the crisis response and public hearings that followed a major oil
pipeline spill. Prior to that he spent more than two decades with Porter
Novelli and Burson-Marsteller. Kehs graduatedPhi Beta Kappafrom Davidson
College with a B.A. in political science.
“It’s an honor to once again call Hill+Knowlton Strategies ‘home,’” Kehs said.
“The firm has an extraordinary depth and breadth of talented professionals
along with a blue-chip roster of clients. The opportunity to lead the firm’s
U.S. energy practice and the Houston office at such a dynamic stage of North
America’s energy Renaissance only adds to my excitement for the future.”
Prior to the Kehs appointment, the U.S. energy practice had been directed by
H+K’s U.S.-based global energy practice leader, Chris Gidez, who remains the
head of the global energy practice.
