Steelworkers Announce Media Teleconference to Discuss Ormet

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The United Steelworkers
(USW) today said that the union will host a media teleconference at 11 a.m. on
Fri., Dec. 27, to update the public on the union's ongoing efforts to save
approximately 1,000 jobs at Ormet's Hannibal, Ohio aluminum smelter.
During the call, USW District 1 Director David McCall and others will discuss
Ormet's request to purchase electricity at wholesale market rates and provide
an update on the situation in Hannibal.
Earlier this month, the USW delivered a first batch of over 9,000 petition
signatures to Gov. John Kasich urging his administration to bring Ormet,
American Electric Power (AEP) and the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio
(PUCO) together to negotiate a power supply arrangement that will allow the
facility to resume operations.
The USW represents 850,000 men and women employed in metals, mining, pulp and
paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing
industries, along with a growing number of workers in public sector and
