Construction Continues at Iberdrola Renewables’ Baffin Wind Farm in Texas Gulf Coast complex capacity will be 606 MW, making it Iberdrola’s largest renewable energy facility in the world Business Wire PORTLAND, Ore. -- December 2, 2013 Construction continues at Iberdrola Renewables’ 202 megawatt Baffin Wind Farm in Kenedy County, Texas, following road construction that began in November. Major activities included mobilizing the construction trailers and equipment, ordering foundation steel and road materials, and initiating grading.Work will continue through December with road and foundation construction on-site and with equipment manufacturing and electrical engineering off-site. Baffin is the company’s third wind power project in the complex, south of Baffin Bay, following the Peñascal I and Peñascal II projects. At 606 MW, the combined complex will become Iberdrola’s largest renewable energy facility in the world. The project expects to reach commercial operation by the end of 2014. The Baffin Wind Farm will add 101 Gamesa wind turbines and have the capacity to produce 202 MW of clean energy. The $300 million investment is expected to create up to 240 jobs during construction and eight permanent positions when the expansion is complete. The existing two phases of Peñascal together total 168 turbines and 403.2 MW, enough to power 140,000 typical homes each year. “The successful development and construction start in Kenedy County is a testament to the partnership we’ve built with the community,” said Rany Raviv, the vice president of business development. “We look forward to starting a few more projects this year that will bring substantial local investment, jobs, and clean energy into additional communities for decades to come.” In addition to Baffin, Iberdrola Renewables has more than 500 MW in late stage development that is on track to begin construction in 2013 or otherwise qualify for the renewable production tax credit.
