Mitsubishi Corporation Disaster Relief Foundation Supports Construction of New
Fish Processing Plant in Ofunato, Iwate
Tokyo, Nov 25, 2013 - (JCN Newswire) - Efforts at Morishita Suisan, a fish
processing business operating out of Ofunato, Iwate, in northeastern Japan,
continue towards recovering from the devastation caused by the 2011 Great East
Japan Earthquake and ensuing tsunami. Through a 50 million yen contribution
from the Mitsubishi Corporation Disaster Relief Foundation, provided in
collaboration with The Bank of Iwate and The Tohoku Bank, the company has
inaugurated the construction of a new seafood processing factory. Construction
of the new factory is slated for completion next summer, and will enable the
fish processor to expand production capacity and restore employment to
pre-disaster levels. In addition, Morishita Suisan plans to enhance its product
offerings, including frozen boiled and grilled fish, and take advantage of the
fact that its factories operate under US-required HACCP certification to expand
into overseas markets.
Headquartered in Ofunato City in Iwate Prefecture, Morishita Suisan's Dai
Ni Kojo factory and cold storage facilities handle the processing of saury,
squid, mackerel and other types of fish. With an annual pre-disaster turnover
of 1.2 billion yen and some 100 employees, the company's distribution
channels extended throughout Japan, but all its plant and cold storage
facilities were completely destroyed by the tsunami. The company partially
resumed production in July 2011 and has since been progressively rebuilding its
production base.
Nearly a thousand days have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, but
Rikuzentakata, which suffered immense damage from the tsunami, is still
recovering from the disaster. The Mitsubishi Corporation Disaster Relief
Foundation will continue to collaborate with local financial institutions such
as The Bank of Iwate and The Tohoku Bank to support efforts aimed at employment
creation and economic recovery in areas affected by the disaster.
