Healthways (NASDAQ: HWAY) today announced it has extended through 2014 its
current contract offering its nationally acclaimed SilverSneakers^® Fitness
Program to eligible Independence Blue Cross (IBC) members throughout
Pennsylvania. SilverSneakers, the nation’s leading exercise program designed
to keep older adults active and healthy, has been offered to members of IBC
since 2008.

The effectiveness of the program is evidenced through a 2012 survey of IBC
members who have participated in the SilverSneakers program. According to the
survey results, 55% of IBC’s SilverSneakers enrollees reported their health as
excellent or very good, almost twice the national average of 30% for older
adults. In addition, 83% of IBC respondents reported no impairment in
activities of daily living, as compared to the national average of 63% for
older adults. Moreover, 95% of IBC members stated they did not feel depressed
much within the last year, a testament to the program’s emphasis on social
programming.

“Independence Blue Cross is committed to exceeding customers’ expectations
through the provision of innovative health and wellness solutions like the
SilverSneakers Fitness Program,” said Ben R. Leedle, Jr., Healthways president
and chief executive officer. “By focusing on increased access to quality
health care and delivering value through its products and services, IBC is
demonstrating its commitment to their older adult members, with a
user-friendly, proven program that offers a unique combination of physical
fitness and essential social experiences.”

Using proven methodologies based upon more than 20 years of science and
outcomes, the SilverSneakers Fitness Program increases physical activity in
older adults, resulting in higher well-being and lower healthcare costs.
SilverSneakers engages participants in more frequent strength training,
aerobic, and flexibility exercise through access to a variety of venues and
programming designed specifically for older adults that incorporates social
experiences.

The SilverSneakers Fitness Program was founded in 1992 and serves more than 10
million eligible members. The Healthways fitness center network offers
convenient access to more than 15,000 participating fitness and wellness
