OKI Achieves H.265 Compatibility for OKI MediaServer and Succeeds in 4K
- Plans early commercial introduction in line with standardization body
TOKYO -- November 12, 2013
OKI (TOKYO:6703) has demonstrated the successful distribution of 4K video
content offering four times the resolution of current high-definition TV
through its OKI MediaServer video distribution server, a product already in
wide use for commercial IPTV services and undergoing trials in international
institutions. OKI MediaServer is currently used for large-scale IPTV services
and at ITU IPTV IPv6 Global Testbed a video distribution test facility based
on the ITU-T IPTV standards. In trials, OKI has achieved compatibility with
the new H.265/HEVC video codecs and successfully demonstrated 4K video
Also known as HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), H.265 is a new video codec
standard recommended in January 2013 by the ITU. Offering a compression ratio
double that of the current H.264, H.265 is slated to enter use as the codec
for 4K broadcasts in Japan in fiscal 2014. The standard is a leading candidate
for future application to IPTV and cable video distribution.
OKI has developed H.265 support for its OKI MediaServer video distribution
server in anticipation of widespread H.265 rollout for video distribution
services, with successful 4K video distribution trials in laboratory
environments. OKI has confirmed that video can be viewed on a 4K-compatible
television after connecting a PC to the distribution server via in-house
networks. Primary IPTV services consist of VOD and linear TV; the latest
trials verified linear TV services. VOD trials are also scheduled following
the development of compatible terminals.
“Following these trials, OKI will work hard to submit proposals to various
standardization bodies in the near future and to develop commercial products
complying with the standards. ITU is already in the process of preparing
documentation on recommendations for IPTV H.265 compatibility, a process to
which OKI has contributed various suggestions,” says Hidetoshi Saigou, Senior
Vice President and General Manager, Telecom Systems Business Division at OKI.
“OKI is also considering trials using the ITU IPTV IPv6 Global Testbed to
expand into countries and regions that have adopted IPTV and are considering
further resolution upgrades, including 4K video distribution.”
OKI will continue to strive to promote expanded features and the
standardization of these features to meet various market needs, including
video services related to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. OKI will thereby continue
developing its video distribution platform business to heighten their appeal
to service providers in Japan and elsewhere around the world.
