Below are statements from Attorney General Eric Holder and Acting Assistant
Attorney General Mythili Raman of the Justice Department's Criminal Division on
the departure from the department of the Director of the Deepwater Horizon Task
Force, John D. Buretta:
Attorney General quote about John Buretta's departure:
"John Buretta has been an aggressive advocate for the citizens of this country,
and he will be missed," said Attorney General Eric Holder. "As the leader of
the Deepwater Horizon Task Force, he has been committed to ensuring that the
victims of this tragedy obtain justice and that those responsible for one of
the worst environmental disasters in our country's history are held
accountable. I am personally indebted to John for his sage advice and tenacity
in protecting the American people."
Acting AAG quote about John Buretta's departure:
"John Buretta has had a long and distinguished career with the Department of
Justice - with both the Criminal Division and the U.S. Attorney's Office for
the Eastern District of New York," said acting Assistant Attorney General
Mythili Raman of the Justice Department's Criminal Division. "For over a
decade, John has been an exemplary public servant and prosecutor. Over the
last three years in particular, John has worked tirelessly to advance the
priorities of the Criminal Division in various leadership roles, including as
Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Deputy Assistant Attorney General,
Senior Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General, and Director of the Deepwater
Horizon Task Force, which he led since its inception in 2011. John is, very
simply, a great lawyer. He has always brought vision, energy and a fierce
dedication to his job; his work ethic is second to none; and his devotion to
the Department's mission is unmatched. As the capstone to a remarkable career
in public service, John led the Deepwater Horizon Task Force in bringing to a
successful conclusion the largest criminal resolution in the Department's
history relating to the tragic explosion and oil spill in 2010 in the Gulf of
Mexico that claimed the lives of eleven men - a direct result of John's
legendary tenacity and skill."
