Epson Introduces New Series of Digital-Output Gyroscopic Sensors for Car
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- November 6, 2013
Epson Electronics America, Inc. (“EEA”) today began shipping samples of its
new XV4001 series of high-precision digital-output gyroscopic sensors. These
sensors are available with either an SPI or I^2C ^ digital interface.

Gyroscopic sensors are used in car navigation systems to improve the accuracy
of GPS systems. By precisely sensing changes in vehicle travel direction, the
gyroscope improves accuracy, especially for on-ramps and off-ramps. When GPS
signals are lost, such as in tunnels or dense urban areas, the gyroscope
provides dead reckoning.
Existing high-accuracy gyroscopes provide an analog output and require an
external analog-to-digital converter. Epson’s XV4001 is the first
high-accuracy gyroscope to provide a digital output.
Epson’s XV4001 series of gyroscopic sensors integrates a small, stable QMEMS ^
gyroscopic sensor and an Epson IC combining an analog front end, an
analog-to-digital converter, and a serial digital interface. They can be
ordered with either a 3- or 4-wire SPI interface or an I^2C interface. These
